Welcome to the Canadian and World Studies

This is the home of History, Civics, Geography and, in the coming years, Law, Economics and Politics.

From the Ministry of Eduction

The main goals of the Canadian and world studies program in Grades 9 and 10 are to help students to:
* gain an understanding of the basic concepts of the subjects taught at this level, as a foundation for further studies in the discipline;
* develop the knowledge and values they need to become responsible, active, and informed Canadian citizens in the twenty-first century;
* develop practical skills (such as critical-thinking, research, and communication skills), some of which are particular to a given subject in Canadian         and world studies and some of which are common to all the subjects in the discipline;
* apply the knowledge and skills they acquire in Canadian and World Studies courses to better understand their interactions with the natural            environment; the political, economic, and cultural interactions among groups of people; the relationship between technology and society; and              the factors contributing to society’s continual evolution.

These goals are all of equal importance. They can be achieved simultaneously in a concrete, practical context through learning activities that combine the acquisition of knowledge with the application of various skills, including inquiry/research, communication, and map and graphic representation skills.

The Ontario Curriculum Grades 9 and 10:  Canadian and World Studies Revised 2005 p3
****************************************************************************************************************************************************************
Canadian and World Studies (CWS) courses are offered at three different levels:  Academic, Applied and Locally Developed, to appeal and be accessible to three different types of learners.

Academic Coures
These courses are coded "A" in grades 9 and 10 and either "M" (university/college level ) or "U" (university level) in grade 11 and 12.

They are intended for students whose ambition is for study at the Academic level heading to post-secondary education.  These courses involve lots of reading:  both for independent research and to keep up with classroom activities as well as writing in argumentative and persuasive forms.  It is recommended that students whose English and Math are taken at the Academic level choose this level of study.

Applied Courses and Open Level Courses
These courses are coded "P" in grades 9 and 10 and correspond to either "C" (college level) or "O" (open level) in grades 11 and 12.

They are intended for students whose interests lie not necessarily in the abstract nature of academic study, but rather in concrete and applicable learning. We will cover the same topics as the Academic stream, but do so with less emphasis on acdemic sources of information.  It is recommended that students whose English and Math are taken at the Applied level choose this level of study.  There is still lots of reading and independent research, however, classes are structured to foster student involvement in activities more often than in Academic sections.

Locally Developed (Essential) Courses
These courses are specially designed for students whose IEP's require modified curriculum.  In our ongoing effort to create engaging and relevant classes for all student, these courses will be tailored to meet the unique needs of the students enrolled in consultation with Special Education.
