YCDSB Schools Recognized by CBC Music Challenge 2024

Congratulations to St. Brother André Catholic High School in Markham, Ont., and St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic High School in Aurora, Ont., for being named finalists in the CBC Music Challenge 2024.

The CBC Music Challenge celebrates Canadian music education. Entries submitted by schools from across the country were judged by the CBC, and on December 12, they shared their top 10s in 12 categories.

St. Brother André CHS was named a finalist for the best rendition of “Yohahí:yo” by Mohawk singer-songwriter Shawnee Kish. You can learn more about the song by clicking here. You can watch St. Brother Andre’s rendition in the video below

Principal of St. Brother André CHS (SBA) Christine Cosentino had the following to say about her school’s recognition:

I couldn’t be prouder of this amazing group of young people and their teacher, Ms. Comella. This wonderful educator has worked so hard not only to develop their skill set, but she has also instilled an unshakeable confidence in each student. The arts are so accessible in this respect and provide opportunities for all students to shine. This wonderful song is also a poignant reflection of our schools’ ongoing commitment to Truth and Reconciliation, demonstrating that this work can be done in a variety of ways. It is moving and impactful, especially as it is sung in both English and Mohawk.  I am so thankful that our choir had this opportunity and the platform to showcase their God-given gifts and their infectious passion. The SBA Community is so proud of you all!

St. Maximilian Kolbe CHS was a finalist in the Junior Vocal (grades 7-10) category for their rendition of “Life Is” by the Canadian rock band Arkells.

Congratulations to these students and staff (and all others who entered the contest) for sharing your amazing God-given talents with the world.
